Dolphins
Welcome to the Dolphin Class

As we begin a new school year, we are excited to be learning some exciting new topics.
During our first half-term, our topic will be ‘Stone Age to Iron Age’- a fascinating prehistoric period when early humans made and used tools out of stone. We will find out about life during the Stone Age, learning how families fished, hunted, cooked and celebrated! Studying artefacts and archaeology, we will learn how they made tools, clothes and weapons– and even how they painted on the walls of caves.
In Science lessons this half term, we will be learning how to group and classify living things, looking at various animals and plants and sorting them into categories, depending on what they have in common.
In Maths, we will be learning about place value, comparing and ordering numbers up to 10,000.
We will also begin working hard on learning our timetables, in preparation for the year 4 times table tests in June.
Important Reminders
PE
Our PE days will be Monday and Thursday. Children will be expected to come to school in their school uniform on these days and to bring their PE kit in their bag, so they can change into it before the PE lesson. Long sleeved trousers and a hoodie/jacket is strongly advised as the weather gets colder. Also, jewellery is not permitted during PE and all long hair should be tied up.
Learning at home
Homework
A homework task will be given out on a Friday and is expected to be handed in by no later than the following Wednesday. This homework task will alternate between a maths, English or topic based task and will be based around the learning we have done in class.
- TT Rockstars at least 3 times per week (at least 10 minutes each time).
This is extremely important in improving their times tables knowledge and great practice for the national times table test that every year 4 will be taking in the summer term. The website to access this is:
Children should be aware of their logins for this - if unsure please contact the class teacher.
There will be regular battles between classes/year groups so please encourage your child to join in.
- Reading at least 3 times per week.
Children will be encouraged to read regularly at home, in order to practise the reading skills being taught at school and to improve their fluency. They should bring home their chosen reading book from our Accelerated Reader collection, which will be at the appropriate level. When they have read the book, they will be asked to complete a quiz, to check their comprehension and understanding of what they have read. If children finish their books at home, they are welcome to quiz at home and can access the quiz by following the link below. Children will then be given the opportunity to change their books the next day in school.
Additionally, all children will be encouraged to regularly borrow a book of their choice from our school library.
