A warm welcome to Woodpeckers Class from Miss Laflin!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to Summer 1!

This half term we are focusing on Zerrafa Giraffa! We are very excited to explore this text and look closely at two very different countries, Egypt and France!

In English, we are going to be writing in role as the giraffe and participate in class discussions and debates about if it was right or wrong for Zeraffa Giraffa to be taken from Egypt. We will have a grammar focus this half term in English and will be learning about the prefix un and the suffixes er, est and full.

In maths, we are recapping the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), consolidating our fraction knowledge and practising telling the time.

During PSHE/RSE we will be looking at body parts and this will link closely to science where we will be learning to identify basic parts of the human body and associate these to our five senses.

This half term, Year 2s will be completing SATS which we will refer to as special jobs. There will be two reading papers and 2 maths papers (one arithmetic and one reasoning paper). Please complete any revision given by teachers on class dojo to help support your children.

After the May half term, Year 1s will be completing the phonics screening where they will need to read a mixture of real and fake words. Again, please complete any revision given by teachers on class dojo to help support your children.

The following links will help support your child's learning this half term:

Keep updated on ClassDojo and Twitter for photos and pieces of work that we complete!

PE - Wednesday & Friday. Please can your child come to school in their PE kit, also wearing suitable trainers or plimsoles. If it is warm then sun tan cream should be applied at home as all lessons will be outdoors. School uniform is not needed on this day. Please remember that children should come to school without earrings unless they can remove these themselves.

Please bring a water bottle to school every day.

We currently have our windows open in the classroom so make sure children have their school cardigan or jumper to keep them warm.

If you have any questions please contact me via Class Dojo or email:

We will be setting weekly homework for your child; this will either be a Maths, Writing or Topic based activity linked to work that we are covering in class. All homework pieces will be set in your child's homework book and all tasks should be completed in there too. We would like them to bring this book back to school every Monday please, so we can check the homework has been done and then issue the next piece of homework for the week.

We are still asking that you read with your child 3x per week and to continue to record any reading sessions in your child's reading journal.
