LO: I am learning to identify and understand different word classes, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Words belong to different groups called word classes. These help us understand how words work in sentences. Today, we will focus on four main word classes:
Nouns (naming words)
Verbs (action words)
Adjectives (describing words)
Adverbs (words that describe actions)
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples:
Person – teacher, doctor, friend
Place – park, school, beach
Thing – pencil, apple, book
Idea – love, happiness, courage
✍ Example sentence: The cat sat on the sofa.
A verb is a word that shows an action or state of being.
Examples:
Action verbs – run, jump, sing, dance
Being verbs – am, is, are, was, were
✍ Example sentence: The dog barked loudly.
An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells us more about a person, place, or thing.
Examples:
big, small, happy, sad, bright, dark, soft, rough
✍ Example sentence: The fluffy cat sat on the comfortable sofa.
An adverb tells us more about a verb. It explains how, when, or where something happens.
Examples:
How? – quickly, slowly, carefully
When? – now, yesterday, soon
Where? – outside, inside, here, there
✍ Example sentence: The dog barked loudly.
Task: Read the text and then draw a table like the one below. Identify and sort the nouns, adjectives and verbs from the text.
The cheerful boy ran across the green field, his small feet kicking up dust as he laughed with joy. He chased a bouncy ball, which rolled towards a tall tree at the edge of the grassy park. His best friend joined him, and together they played an exciting game. The warm sun shone brightly in the clear sky, while a gentle breeze whispered through the rustling leaves. Nearby, a curious squirrel scampered up the rough bark of the tree, watching the children with its tiny eyes.
Challenge Task:
✍ Write two of your own sentences using at least one noun, one verb, one adjective, and one adverb.
