LO: I am learning to understand what contractions are and be able to use them correctly in a sentence.

Contractions are shortened words made by joining two words together and using an apostrophe (’) to replace missing letters.

Why do we use contractions?

  • They make writing sound more natural.
  • We use them a lot in speech and informal writing.

📌 Task: Look at the words in brackets and rewrite the sentence using a contraction.

  1. I (am) very happy today. → ________

  2. She (is) my best friend. → ________

  3. We (will) go to the beach tomorrow. → ________

  4. He (does not) like carrots. → ________

  5. They (are) playing outside. → ________

  6. I (cannot) hear you. → ________

✏️ Write your answers down on a piece of paper.

📌 Task: There are no apostrophes in these contractions! Rewrite them correctly.

  1. I am excited for the trip → Im excited for the trip.
  2. She is playing football → Shes playing football.
  3. You will love this movie → Youll love this movie.

📌 Task: Write three sentences using contractions.

Example:

  • I’m really hungry because I haven’t eaten yet!

🎯Challenge task:

Rewrite this short paragraph using contractions:

I am going to the park because it is sunny. I will take my football, as me and my friends have planned to play a game. They are all excited to play!
