Divert

In the Autumn Term, a group of children from Year 5/6 took part in a programme called Divert. Matt from Ipswich Town Football Club came in to lead this for six sessions.

During the first week the session looked at the skills and habits a footballer needs e.g. healthy eating, sleep patterns, resilience and teamwork. When we compared them to us in school we could see that many of these crossed over and we need those too.
In week 2, the group looked at the Healthy Eating Plate and portion sizes of food. They drew their favourite foods and also did a spelling activity linked to healthy snacks.
In week 3, the children talked about what they are good at. They also thought about reasons to feel proud. They thought about something they were hoping to get from this session. This linked in to helping children think about their self-esteem.
In week 4, the focus was on mental wellbeing and thinking about things they could control and things that are out of their control.
In week 5, the focus has been on linking some threads on self-confidence, self-esteem and aspirations. The children completed sheets about themselves including their achievements and skills they have or would like to develop. They also thought about setting themselves some goals.
In the final week, Matt brought a former pupil of our school and footballer, Jason Dozzell to visit the group. The children got to ask questions and to recap all of the topics covered so far. We also talked about role models and did a group activity listing the qualities a role model might have. The children then enjoyed showing Jason around school and he talked about his memories of his time here.
