Welcome to Autumn 1 in Wrens!
Welcome to a brand new year of school! We are so happy to have you back refreshed and ready for a new year of exploring, learning and fun!
This half term, Year 1s will begin an exciting new chapter of their learning! They will have individual English, maths, science and topic books to record learning in as well as COOL books where they will be able to record their own learning when choosing in the hall and outdoor area.
Our focus text this half term is Beegu! Through this book, we will learn to apply our phonics knowledge to write captions, sentences, and character descriptions in English. In Maths, we will be learning to recognise numbers to 20, 1:1 count and add and subtract within 10. During our daily maths meetings, we will learn the days of the week, months of the year, weather, tell the time to O'clock and count forwards and backwards. During our science lessons, we will be learning about different types of materials, their everyday uses and exploring their properties. In geography, we will be learning about physical and human features and study the geography of our surrounding area. In PE, we will master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination in gymnastics. In DT, we will be developing our sewing skills by learning how to plan and make an alien puppet. In PSHE we will be learning how to make a caring classroom environment and in RSHE we will be learning the importance of respecting others even when they are different from ourselves. In computing we will be creating pictograms; learning how digital data can be stored and organised. Lastly in RE, we will be exploring Judaism and answering the key question 'Why do Jewish families talk about repentance at New Year?'
Welcome back to Autumn 2!
This half term is always full of so much fun! Our focus text is Out and About which is a book full of poems. In English, we will be exploring these poems, how they make us feel, what they tell us. You will also be writing your own poems and exploring different types of poems. In Maths we will be building on your number sense with addition and subtraction, looking at number sentences, fact families, part/part whole and missing numbers. In Science we will be looking at the 5 main animal groups and learning about these in great detail. In Geography you are continuing to grow your map skills and begin to look at weather patterns and different weathers across the world. PE will be exploring ball skills and the basic skills of dribbling, passing and throwing as well as dance in your PE sessions with Mr Bolton. PSHE is exploring your rights, responsibilities and looking at your own feelings and becoming self-aware. In Art you will be developing the skill of collage through continuous provision and with our Art day. Finally in RE we will be learning about Christianity and the story of Jesus which goes well as we will also engage in Christmas activities and be performing our KS1 Nativity at the end of this half term!
Welcome back to Spring 1!
We hope you had a lovely break and are looking forward to returning to school. This half term, our focus text is 'The story tree'. This is a book with lots of traditional fairy tales from all over the world. We will be looking at 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff.' We will be retelling the story and writing it in our on words, exploring the vocabulary and extended that learning into our continuous provision. In Maths, we are looking at 2D/3D shapes, addition and subtraction and place value but up to 50. In Geography, we are learning about the world, specifically the UK, the different continents and the oceans we are surrounded by. In Science, we are exploring plants, their life cycles and the parts of a plant. In RE, we are looking at the religion Islam and our question to explore is 'How do some Muslims show Allah is compassionate and merciful?. In PE, we are learning all about how to control a ball with our feet and also engaging with gymnastics with Mr Bolton. We will be completing our computing day and our art day this half term which is always a fun filled day!
Welcome back for Spring 2!
This term we will be exploring a new text called 'Biscuit Bear'. In English, we will be looking at writing instructions so that we can do some cooking of our own. We will also be making predictions, looking deeper into some of the main characters and having some fun with role play. In Maths, we will be looking at fractions, including halves, thirds and quarters. We will also be moving onto shape, looking at 2d and 3d shapes and lines of symmetry. During our Science lessons, we will be looking at animals including humans. This will include considering how offspring turn into adults, the basic needs of animals and the importance of exercise and hygiene. In History, we are learning about the great fire of London, thinking about significant individuals and the events which unfolded all of those years ago on Pudding Lane. In PE, we will be developing our skills with rackets, bats and balls. With Mr Bolton, we will be developing our dance and performance skills.
In Design & Technology, we will be doing some cooking, linking this in with our story of 'Biscuit Bear'. In PSHE we will be considering a safe way to watch television. We will also look at online relationships and keeping safe on the internet. In Computing we will be looking at information technology around us, thinking about common uses beyond school.
Lastly in RE, we are looking at the religion Christianity and focussing on trust, with the question 'Why do Christians trust Jesus and follow him?'
We will use our lovely COOL (Choosing Our Own Learning) area to further extend learning (both indoors and outdoors), which provides lots of different opportunities for every child's individual interests - including Writing, Reading, Maths, Computing, Construction, Small World, Fine Motor, Investigation, Art, Sand and Water areas.
Welcome back for Summer 1!
This term we will be exploring a new text called 'Lila and the Secret of Rain'. In English, we will be exploring the culture of different African countries alongside our focus text and other African tales. We will be describing settings, asking questions, creating some beautiful poetry and performing these. We will also be writing a diary entry in the role of our book character Lila, conveying her thoughts, feelings and wishes.
In Maths, we will finish looking at subtraction before moving onto measurement. This will include length and height, mass, capacity and telling the time.
During our Science lessons, we will be continuing our learning on animals including humans. We will be exploring key vocabulary herbivores, omnivores and carnivores and conducting a range of scientific experiments relating to animal diets and our human senses. We will be working scientifically by conducting research, observing closely and asking questions to deepen our understanding.
In Geography, we are learning about the differences between the UK and another area of the world. We will primarily be researching and exploring life in Kenya (alongside our focus text 'Lila and the Secret of Rain'). This will include looking at landscape, weather, vegetation and wildlife.
In PE, we will be developing our jumping skills. With Mr Bolton, we will be working on attacking and defending principles within team games.
In Art, we will be looking at and creating African textiles and patterns in our own little projects.
In PSHE and RSHE we will be learning about basic First Aid and how to contact the Emergency services.
In Computing we will be using technology to make music!
Lastly in RE, we are looking at the religion Judaism with our focus question being 'Why is the Torah such a joy for the Jewish community?'

Reminders
Please ensure that you child has a water bottle every day and any of their belongings are named.
Please try to read with your child everyday (at least 3x per week) and record any reading sessions in your child's reading journal. This can just be a date and a signature. Your child will be entered into a half termly raffle every time they read 3x a week so please remember to record any reading in their journal to maximise their chances of winning a voucher/book!
Ensure homework is completed each week and the homework book is in your child's book bag to be collected in every Monday.
