KS1 home reading

Your child will be given a colour banded book that is suitable to their reading level. Sometimes the book your child brings home may seem ‘too easy’ but we want the children to be able to answer questions about the book and discuss it to show that they have fully understood the text. When the class teacher feels your child is ready, they will be moved up to the next colour band.

To support your child’s learning, we ask that you try to find 10-15 minutes a day (at least three times a week) to spend reading with your child and that you sign their reading record as evidence that they have read at home.

When you are reading with your child, you can help them to improve their understanding by discussing what they have read and asking questions about the book – ideas to help you with this are contained within the reading record and on the link below:

KS1 classes will check reading records on a Monday. To celebrate reading, if your child has read at least 3 times the week before and have this written in their record, their name will be put on a raffle ticket and entered into our KS1 prize draw. At the end of the half term, 3 raffle tickets will be drawn and the winners will receive a prize; a book or voucher. Your child will also get additional playtime every Monday afternoon if they have read 3 times at home to celebrate regular home reading.

(this will resume after Easter in the summer term to allow children time to transition back to school on 8th March).

Your child will be able to change their book on any day. Due to current circumstances, staff will need to clean any book before they are given to another child. It is important that your child asks an adult in their class to change their books with them so they can be cleaned properly.

Currently our KS1 library is closed but we are hoping to get this running again soon- further information will be given when this can begin.

You can also access additional levelled reading books online on Oxford reading tree. Username and Password has been shared on Class Dojo. If you require this again, please email or Dojo message the teacher.

If you have any questions about the reading records, please email your child’s teacher or the English coordinator (Miss Hyam).
