# Week beginning 22.06.22

## Roman Numerals We Romans designed a fantastic number system, using adding and subtracting… I challenge you to solve my problems!

Two things to remember:

1: A letter after a larger value letter means you add it:

e.g.     XI is 10 + 1 = 11      or       CX is 100 + 10 = 110

2. A small valued letter before a big one means you take it away:

e.g.       IX is 10 – 1 = 9      or       XC is 100 – 10 = 90 Challenge 1:

Work out what numbers these Roman numerals represent:

1. VIII =
2. IV =
3. XII =
4. XV =
5. LX =
6. XL =
7. XIV =
8. XVII =

Now write these numbers in Roman numerals:

1. 13 =
2. 22 =
3. 30 =
4. 49 =
5. 25 =
6. 101 =
7. 99 =
8. 90 =

### Extension Challenge.

Solve these Roman number sentences, write the answer in numbers.

1. LX – VIII =            2. XL – VI =               3. C + XL =                4. MIV + XIV =

Solve these number sentences; write the answer in Roman numerals.

1. 902 + 87 =                        2.852 – 15 =             3. 130 – 51=

4. 320 – 58 =                       5.875 – 32 =            6. 1231 – 765 =
